Find the gift amid the challenges.

This is one of the things I’ve working on doing throughout my life, but especially since the COVID-19 pandemic hit the US in March. It’s so easy to get caught up in the negative, isn’t it? But I’ve learned over the years, and had an unprecedented opportunity to practice lately, how powerful it can be to reframe what initially looks like a problem into something positive. New experiences bring with them valuable insight and the ability to see things differently—I learned that lesson firsthand during the pandemic.

The pandemic forced changed upon all of us that fundamentally changed our daily routines. I was concerned initially, but as the weeks went by, I was amazed and inspired by how flexible and creative people could be. Finding new and different ways to do things became not only possible, but really energizing when done with intention and an open heart.

For example, I’ve been working with clients remotely via Zoom for more than a year—an M.O. that has really accelerated over the past five months—and we’ve learned that videoconferencing allows us to meet our financial coaching goals very well! What started as a necessity gradually became a preferred convenience for some. Even though it is sometimes possible to meet in-person now with certain safety precautions and protocols in place, many clients find that our Zoom sessions are just as effective and take a bit less time (fewer transportation, parking and logistical concerns). Even without meeting face to face, I still feel a strong connection with my clients—and they with me.

Long before coronavirus, many years before COVID-19, my husband and I dreamed about living in a warmer climate where we could enjoy a lower cost of living and the opportunity to enjoy more time outdoors. But the decision to move always felt like an “either/or” proposition–either I kept my office in Frederick and we lived here exclusively, or I would not be able to continue working with clients in the way that has filled my soul for the past five years.

Surprisingly, it was the pandemic’s very limitations that served to expand my thinking about this! Slowly but surely, it became clear to me that I was looking at a “both/and” solution! I could maintain an office in Frederick and a satellite location, and continue to provide financial coaching, just in a different way.

Giddy with the idea of a both/and solution, my husband and I made the decision to put one of the most important financial principles I discuss with my clients into practice for us. Answering the question “What do you want most out of the life/the money you have saved?” for us meant purchasing a home in South Carolina. We thought about the timing, but kept coming back to “If not now, when?” So we took the plunge! We are delighted to be able to make this decision now, but I will tell you that it was still a difficult one.

 Money Mentor Group will have two locations, and we will continue to educate, encourage and empower our clients through financial coaching, workshops and online products. I plan to expand the Money Mentor Group’s reach in the Carolinas, while continuing to support the individuals and businesses I am already working with here in Frederick. My business partner, Karen, and our coach, Alissa, will continue to support our ongoing Frederick initiatives.

I feel remarkably fortunate to have this opportunity. My husband and I are on the threshold of a second chapter of our life—one that we have dreamed about and saved for, and now have the chance to enjoy while we are still young and healthy. Opening a second location for Money Mentor Group and having the chance to share what I believe is a unique approach to personal and professional financial management is also inspiring and exciting. I can’t wait to share some pictures of my new office, which will be a dedicated space to serve my clients.

As a big Frederick fan, I feel fortunate to have numerous friends who have offered to open their homes to me during my scheduled trips back. I am thrilled to be able to continue supporting and enhancing the business here in Frederick where the idea for Money Mentor Group first took hold.

Since staring the business in 2015, your loyal support has helped Money Mentor Group grow. I am grateful for every client encounter I have had and look forward to nurturing these relationships—along with new ones– in the years to come.
